Minutes into the movie, you realize that the term masterpiece is being erased and replaced

“300″ has so much to offer in the way of images that speak of the worlds inside our heads. But
it only enlarges them. Gory battle becomes a bellicose ballet. A beautiful speciman of a man is revealed as

other men without so much as a shiver.

The images that pass through the screen seem unweighted, knocked only to the floor by actors’ lines

to form a human hill. Frame after frame goes by, and after a while, it seems as if you are stuck in
a dream from which you have no power to end. No ability to wake up.

So many powerful images. So little meaning. Somewhere, someone with directorial talent will be
watching “300″ and thinking to him or herself someday, the movie will be the film that launched
a true masterpiece.

My response: I love the line “an entire picture gone over by a highlighter pen.” Wish I’d written it myself. That description for me captures the glossy, heightened aesthetic of the film. When I watched “300,” I was intrigued by how visually striking it was — and how poorly it engaged my other senses. I couldn’t smell this movie. I was never overcome by the roar of battle. When I watched the combat scenes in “Saving Private Ryan,” I even remember the acid taste of fear. Instead, “300″ had sort of a cheery tang to it, like an Icee.

And I agree about the trailer. When I first saw the TV ad, I actually got a little bit of a chill. It felt like something groundbreaking, something significant. Sucked in by the marketing prowess, I felt that if I missed this movie on the big screen, I’d be behind the movie curve. Instead, the movie as a whole never came close to capturing that sense of grandeur.

By the way, I did write a column last week poking fun at “300.” When you can’t beat ‘em, laugh at ‘em.
